Chefs Hats & Chef Hats

The chefs hat, the most symbolic item of clothing that a chef wears. Just from seeing this one item he profession of the wearer can be instantly told. The chef hat or toque blanche (white hat in French) is a tall, pleated, round, white hat worn by chefs.

The many folds in a chefs hat is believed to symbolise the many ways in which a chef can cook an egg, and the height of chefs hats are also sometimes used to indicate different ranks in the kitchen.

The origin of the chefs hat is believed to date back as far as the 18th century, where hats were popular in many trades and a stocking cap was worn by chefs, back then varying colours of cap would indicate rank.

The modern chefs hat was made popular by French chefs Marie-Antoine Carême and Auguste Escoffier. The colour white was adopted as a symbol of the cleanliness of the profession.
